Dry Cutting Stone? Control the Dust Before It Controls the Jobsite

Dry Cutting Stone? Control the Dust Before It Controls the Jobsite

Dry cutting stone dust control starts before the grinder touches the material. Without a shroud, silica dust fills the cutting zone, clouds the line, and forces the operator to slow down or lift the tool to check the pass.

That is where mistakes, rework, cleanup time, and exposure concerns start to stack up. The Alpha Ecoguard Type C gives fabricators and installers a cleaner control point at the source, with a visible cut line, dust capture, and steadier grinder support in one attachment.

Two Problems Every Dry Cut Creates

Uncontrolled dry cut dust creates two problems at once. The first is exposure. When an angle grinder cuts stone without source control, fine silica dust can move into the air around the operator and the work area. That matters for safety planning, cleanup, and any workflow built around OSHA silica requirements.

The second problem is control. When dust fills the cutting zone, cut line visibility drops fast. The operator either slows the pass, lifts the grinder to check the line, or keeps cutting with less confidence. None of those help accuracy. Over time, that can mean more rework, rougher results, and less predictable production.

What the Alpha Ecoguard Type C Does at the Source

The Alpha Ecoguard Type C is built to control dust where the cut starts: at the blade. Its hybrid dust collection design captures more than 90% of dust at the source, helping keep airborne material down before it spreads across the jobsite.

The clear polycarbonate shroud also keeps the line visible, so the operator can stay on the mark instead of cutting through a dust cloud. A foot plate helps hold the grinder at 90 degrees for straighter cuts, and the setup allows adjustable cutting depth up to 1-1/4 inch with a new 5 inch blade.

The Type C is for Type 1 dry blade cutting only. It is not the same as the Type G for grinding or the Type CD for core drilling.

Which Grinders It Fits and Which Blades It Accepts

The Alpha Ecoguard Type C fits selected 4.5 inch and 5 inch grinder models from common shop brands, including Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Metabo, Flex, and Hitachi. Alpha makes the collar system easier to sort by engraving the grinder manufacturer name on each collar, so setup does not turn into guesswork.

For blades, the Type C accepts up to a 5 inch blade and is made for Type 1 dry cutting blade use. Compatible Alpha dry blades include Katana, Libero, Laminam, Plus, Eclipse, Sonic, and Ultracuts. Four spacers are included for blade-to-cut-line alignment to help match the blade to the cut line.

Using It With or Without a Vacuum

The Type C can be used with the included dust bag or connected to a vacuum. For occasional dry cut stone angle grinder work, the bag gives the operator a basic containment option without changing the whole cutting process.

For repeated cuts or production-level work, pair the shroud with a HEPA vacuum. That is the stronger setup for a silica dust control workflow, especially when cutting on active jobsites or running multiple passes in a day. The bag helps manage dust. A vacuum gives the system stronger pull at the cut and better containment for higher-volume dry cutting.

Add Dust Control to Your Dry-Cutting Setup

At $250, the Alpha Ecoguard Type C is a practical upgrade for shops and installers that already use dry blades on compatible grinders. Before ordering, check your grinder model against the compatibility list and confirm the right collar for your tool.

FAQ

Does the Alpha Ecoguard Type C work without a vacuum?

Yes. The Alpha Ecoguard Type C can be used with the included dust bag or connected to a vacuum. That flexibility helps when the cut count is low, the jobsite is tight, or a full vacuum setup is not practical for a quick pass.

For regular dry cutting stone dust control, a HEPA vacuum is still the better pairing. The dust bag helps contain material, but a vacuum gives the shroud stronger pull at the cut and fits better into a serious silica dust control workflow.

What is the difference between the Ecoguard Type C, Type G, and Type CD?

The Type C is for dry cutting with a diamond cutting blade. That is the model to look at when you need an angle grinder dust shroud stone setup for controlled cuts with a dry blade.

The Type G is built for grinding, sanding, and surface-prep work. The Type CD is for core drilling applications. If you are cutting stone with a dry blade, stay with the Type C. Matching the guard to the task matters because cutting, grinding, and drilling all throw dust and debris differently.

Will the Ecoguard Type C make my dry cutting OSHA compliant?

No. No dust collection cover grinder should be treated as a complete OSHA compliance solution by itself. OSHA compliance depends on the task, tool, exposure level, work practices, vacuum equipment, respiratory protection where required, housekeeping, and the employer’s exposure control plan.

The Type C supports silica dust-control workflows when paired with appropriate vacuum equipment, compliant work practices, and the right jobsite controls. Think of it as a practical source-control attachment, not a standalone compliance guarantee.

What blade diameter does the Ecoguard Type C accept?

The Alpha Ecoguard Type C accepts dry cutting blades up to 5 inches in diameter. That blade limit matters before ordering, especially if your shop uses different grinder sizes or blade formats across crews.

The Type C is designed for Type 1 dry cutting blades only. If your application uses a larger blade, a wider kerf blade, a grinding wheel, or a different cutting method, confirm the setup before buying.

Which angle grinder brands are compatible with the Ecoguard Type C?

The Type C is made for selected 4.5 inch and 5 inch high-speed angle grinders. Compatible brands include Bosch, Dewalt, Flex, Hitachi, Makita, Metabo, and Milwaukee.

Do not assume every grinder from those brands fits. Collar fit is the detail that decides whether the shroud mounts correctly. Check your exact grinder model against the compatibility list, or ask GMR to confirm the right collar before ordering.

What is the maximum cutting depth with the Ecoguard Type C?

With a new 5 inch blade, the Type C can cut up to 1-1/4 inch deep. That depth is enough for many common dry cut stone angle grinder tasks, but it is not a replacement for every saw or every production cutting setup.

Cutting depth also changes as the blade wears. If you need repeated deep cuts, confirm the material, blade, grinder, and dust-control setup before relying on the Type C for the whole job.

What should the Type C not be used for?

The Type C is not for grinding, core drilling, metal cutting, abrasive blades, carbide blades, or general-purpose cutting outside its intended use. It is designed for dry cutting concrete, stone, and masonry products with diamond cutting wheels.

That boundary matters. Using the wrong cover for the wrong task can create fit problems, poor dust control, blade issues, or unsafe tool behavior. If you are not sure whether your application fits the Type C, confirm it with GMR before you put it into production.
